Maurice TownsendWelcome to the ASSAP paranormal blog! Though this blog is aimed at anyone interested in the paranormal, it will be of particular interest to the paranormal research community. Updated frequently, but not regularly (don't expect something new every day!), it covers any paranormal topic, as well as highlighting recent changes to the ASSAP website.

Whenever new information becomes available on a subject ASSAP covers, it is added to the relevant pages of the website straight away. So, just because you've read a page, don't assume it will still be exactly the same when you next look. That way the ASSAP website remains an up to date research resource.

The photo (above right, pic by Val Hope) is the ASSAP blogger himself, out looking for anomalies wherever they are to be found, so that you can read about them here. To contact the ASSAP blog, email here.

Important note: If anything in this blog does not make sense, try following the links in text! If it still doesn't make sense, that's probably my fault ...

Previous blog pages ... (including ghosts, UFOs, poltergeists, flying rods, miracles, orbs, hypnotic regression, big cats, vampires, near sleep experiences, premonitions, shadow ghosts, paranormal photos, auras, river monsters and dozens of other subjects)

27 June: When nothing happened!

Weird sunRegular readers will know that I seem to see famous people a lot - more than 'normal' in my opinion, though I've no idea what normal is in this context. So when I saw a famous actor at a major railway station recently it came as no big surprise. What WAS a surprise was that she spoke to me! That has never happened before. It was a bit embarrassing because, though I knew her face from TV, I couldn't recall her name. Sadly, I then woke up! As dreams go it was particularly vivid and detailed, so much so that I had a very strong feeling that it was a premonition, due to take place that very day!

I did indeed travel to that same major railway station, as I'd always intended to do. I spent quite a long time there, walking around but I never saw the actor, or anyone else famous. It was disappointing! So why am I reporting an event where nothing happened? It's because I'm sure such non-events happen all the time but are never reported.

Suppose I had 20 such 'premonitions' and only one actually came true. If I only reported that 'true' one it might sound like I have a precognitive gift. However, it sounds less dramatic if I also mentioned the other 19! But it does put my supposed gift into context. Don't worry, I'm not going to make a habit of reporting non-events but I might keep a personal record of them to see what proportion, if any, come true.

There is an intriguing post script. Just after I decided to write this post I sat down to watch some relaxing TV. Choosing purely at random I started watching a short drama. It turned out that the plot revolved entirely around premonition.

15 June: Hearing someone who is not there!

Weird sunI heard a new, and telling, variant on the strange 'sounds behind music' phenomenon recently. For anyone who isn't a regular reader, the 'sounds behind music' phenomenon happens like this. I will be playing loud music in a building where I am completely alone. Then I will hear sounds like someone moving about elsewhere in the building. If I turn off the music the noises vanish instantly and, on every occasion, a search reveals that I am indeed completely alone. So, it's all a bit spooky!

I don't know the cause of the phenomenon however I've no reason, based on current evidence, to suppose it has anything other than a natural explanation. But I could see how others might take it to be a ghostly phenomenon. For previous reports of this phenomenon see here.

Anyway, in a recent example I thought I heard someone talking. It was a familiar voice saying something expected, though unfortunately I can't remember the words now. As with the 'movement' noises, the sounds stopped when the music stopped and there was no one there. I have noticed in the past that the 'sounds behind music' only happen when I'm expecting someone to arrive at any moment. On this occasion I heard that expected person, or thought I did!

This latest case strongly suggests an auditory hallucination as I apparently heard a person known to me who was not physically present. The phenomenon relies on loud music as well as expectation. The role the loud music plays may be to make it difficult to hear any other noises. This, perhaps, puts my brain into a hypervigilant mode (because someone could approach me with no auditory warning) making it susceptible to auditory hallucinations. I suppose it could also be interpreted as a premonition as the expected person then did appear. However, it was hardly a surprise, quite the reverse in fact. While the 'movement' noises could have been a form of aural misperception, this latest example certainly points more towards auditory hallucination.

11 June: The article that changed itself (perhaps)

Weird sunAs I commented recently (here). the MWR (microsleep with REM - see here) phenomenon, which could easily be taken for paranormal, just keeps on producing novelties. For instance, the latest observation from MA (my acquaintance who gets MWRs) suggests a possible source of some false memories.

MA was reading a factual article about social media. Then MA heard a voice MWR which often happens while reading. However, unlike 'normal' voice MWRs, this one consisted of a single sentence that was completely relevant to the article MA was reading. Indeed it appeared to be IN the article! But MA knew it was definitely a MWR because it ended with a characteristic feeling. MA then re-read the article several times but the sentence was definitely not there.

Usually MA's voice MWRs are random phrases as if overheard from someone else's conversation. So this example, an apparent addition to an article, came as a complete surprise. A witness who did not recognise such an experience as a MWR would no doubt have be convinced that it was a completely true memory. They would have 'read' the 'additional' sentence as if it was really in the original article, even though it wasn't. It would be a false memory. If the discrepancy was noticed it might even be reported as an article that changed by itself!

MA has also recently made a general observation concerning voice MWRs. The messages often appear as snatches from other people's conversations, giving the impression of being from an external source, possibly a psychic message. However, they never use any vocabulary, phrases or expressions that MA would not use. This is hardly surprising given that they are produced by MA's own brain. It could even form the basis of a test to see if a set of voice messages is likely to be MWRs.

5 June: A bolt from the blue

Weird sunI was standing in a room one day recently, by a window, doing nothing in particulars, when there was a blinding flash! It was literally so bright I couldn't see anything but white for a second. I'd hardly had time to think 'what the ...' when there was a massive bang. I realised it was a lightning strike nearby. Given the time it took for the thunder to arrive the lightning must have struck within a few hundred metres, possibly much less given the brightness of the flash. But here's the really strange thing. I looked out of the window and saw only blue sky. Indeed, that's why I wasn't expecting any thunder as it was a bright sunny day. It came as a bolt from the blue!

I checked the view from other windows and, in fact, there were some dark clouds nearby. But from the window I was standing next to, these were not visible. So not a bolt from the blue after all. But if I'd only had one view from one window I would continue to think now that it had, indeed, been a lightning bolt from a cloudless sky. It makes me wonder about various anomalous reports I've read where perhaps the witness might have noticed a natural cause if only they'd been able to see more or their surroundings. It is always worth checking if a witness had a restricted view of their surroundings. And even with an unrestricted view many natural causes may be hidden by darkness at night.

In fact, lightning does sometimes occur under a blue sky. It can travel over 40km from its storm cloud of origin. This happens when lightning comes out of the side of a cloud rather than from the bottom. Research has shown that bolts from the blue are actually surprisingly common. So it turns out the phenomenon is not anomalous at all but still fascinating. Thunder storms are awe-inspiring and the brief 'white out' caused by the lightning I experienced remains a memorable event.
